INTRODUCTION
We have been using and experimenting with materials, products, and equipment in our projects and privately for many years. As a result, we have created an extensive data base, using our personal experiences from case histories in building and renovation, published data from other sources on toxics, and data from chemically sensitive people's reactions. Included in this is data from medical books and other publications, and our own information from hundreds of  clients we have talked with all across the country over the years. Because we work in the field, we are very aware of not only what works and what doesn't, but why things work and why they don't, who they work for and who they won't. We have become very aware of  when and how to use materials and equipment, and all the specifics surrounding material handling for healthy building.
Creating safe healthy environments for sensitive people is not an easy task. It is so detailed and involved that one small mistake can be devastating  to our health and our pocketbook, as many people will testify to. Because there are so many details we need to understand to accomplish each small task properly, and the handling of specialty materials is so different from what the ordinary contractor does or knows how to do, we have always made an effort to instruct people on what materials to use under different circumstances, and how to use them properly.

For many years we have avoided selling materials. Salesmen usually say anything to make a sale, and we all are regularly fooled by false claims and poor quality products. But, because we have been using most of these products for so long, it is only logical that we start supplying friends and clients with these materials that are hard to find and difficult to use.
 

PRODUCT INFORMATION
We make a great effort to be sure our products are NOT;
1. from sweat shops,
2. from or linked to harming or affecting endangered species,
3. animal tested,
4. from sources that destroy the planet,
5. detrimental to human health.
All products that are organic are specified as such.
We are primarily concerned that our products are safe for human use, and they do not have levels of toxics in them that create health risks for our clients. Therefore we classify products and make specifics notes for all concerns relative to health affecting issues with all our products.

PRODUCT  RATING  SYSTEM

                                           Safe for human use!!!

Our products must be safe for human use. It is unfortunate in today's world that we have actually very few products that are not in some way a problem for human health. Kids suffer the most, as their respiration rate per pound is so much higher than adults. Most toxics, like poisons and so on are not properly investigated before they are placed on the market. Also, "safety standards" are set for the average full sized [overweight] American adult!! So when risks are spoken of relative to human exposure, kids and other physical variables that may affect health are not explained or qualified.
From the soup of toxics a product may be made from, to the environment it is used in, there are any number of  contaminants that can affect our health. Our society has lost perspective and therefore control over this problem.
Through years of  our private research, we have established our Tad Taylor's HEALTHY HOMES rating system for products, to make known risk factors to human health.

We primarily sell products we have tested and used. These are classified in our rating system, detailing it's class of safety and any special handling or application procedures required to make that product safe. [We may be currently testing others, which  have not been rated yet. These will be marked as such].
Every product comes with notes that are based on our research. This is a whole new standard, the first of it's kind, based on actual human health data, not from testing with mice or from theory, for people who want to know the truth relative to health!!

A DOUBLE LETTER rating   [like D-C], indicates the product may cross rating lines, especially if the product can achieve two states. Paint is a good example. It is a liquid that becomes a solid when it is used. The toxics are gases, that are usually most active when wet. When the paint dries, it may have another rating. Letter one in a two letter rating of  C-B for example, indicates C, the first letter, that the material is STANDARD when wet, but  then B or NONTOXIC when dry.We are rather strict in our classifications, because of our experience. We make these reasons known so you are aware of the issues.

A; INERT
No odor, no offgassing

B; NON-TOXIC
There may be some odor but it is not toxic in most cases. Exceptions to the rule may be a very small number of people who have problems with the material or associated odors. A good example of this would be wood. Normally sensitive people do not have problems with maple or ash, but in very rare cases some do. Warnings will be posted on each product category as necessary.

C; STANDARD
Materials like regular fabrics or insulation would fit this class. Certain chemicals may be present with these products that cause definite health problems.

D; HAZARDOUS
Items that fit this category would be  Clorox., oil based paint, ozone and other materials that cause obvious health problems.

E; EXTREMELY TOXIC
Chlordane,  gasoline, fuel oil, pesticides, herbicides etc. fit this category.

We offer a myriad of services relative to building, design and the use of all materials and equipment. Healthy building is not just about choosing materials, it is about choosing the right materials, using them properly, and integrating each area with then next properly. Houses are systems, either working properly together, or not working in sinct. Over 95% of all housing today is sub standard relative to health because of improper design, workmanship or material and equipment use. There is really only one type of window air conditioner, though companies sell two types, [those that recirculate interior air and those that bring in exterior air]. The ones that are supposed to recirculate interior air only, let air in from the outside, even when they are supposed to be closed off. Because the vents are poorly built and designed, they are far from air tight. As house pressure demands, air can  be sucked in from outside through the appliance into the house.

In many states it is now a code requirement to fill all plumbing and electrical holes with draft stop material. This reduces the capability of fires to spread rapidly through wall cavities, but it also stops toxic air flow through wall cavities into the interior rooms. Air transfer through wall cavities carries toxic insulation and other particulate contamination and odors.
When properly installed in new constructions, draft stop will also eliminate toxic air flow that can cause health problems.

TAD'S TIP'S !!!  SILICONE
Silicone is a porous material. It will absorb toxic odors if used as a barrier to stop toxics from entering. For example, mirror adhesive is a type of silicone, but not 100%, and is very toxic. Using regular silicone to fill cracks around mirrors in hopes of  containing this odor will work for only a short period of time. The odor will eventually come right through the 100% silicone.

Also, do not use NON PAINTABLE silicone in any application that may need to be painted in the future! Paint will not stick to this, and if it is painted on, the paint will bead up and look terrible! Paint will absolutely not stick to this, not even a little bit.

CAULK, HEAT  RESISTANT; B
Every house we go into has holes and leaks in the furnace, boiler vent duct or chimney attachment. This allows for combustion gas blow back when the furnace fires up, and sometimes continually during regular running operations.
If you have a gas furnace, pilot toxics like carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxides etc can escape all the time if the house pressure demands. All duct joints and intersections with chimneys should be air tight. This is the stuff that will with stand the heat from stoves, boilers and furnaces, forming an air tight seal that should last for a long time. No odor,use in applications up to 2000 degrees, and on clean surfaces. Apply with fingers or trowel.

Tad's Tips!!!!
Cementing up all the holes, cracks and seams is always a good move under any circumstances, but in many situations this will not eliminate the source of all the leaks. This is especially true for gas appliances, which usually will leak from so many sources, sealing cracks in exhaust vents may not have an impact. Because of all the variables with gas appliances, we generally advocate the removal of this equipment, especially gas water heaters, dryers, furnaces and boilers.

Tri-sodium phosphate, the best degreaser and oil remover we have found. No odor what-so-ever.
We use this on location for cleaning metal and so on. In the laundry, it will remove oil from sizing, and other chemicals used to make cloth, including pesticides.

TSP is a miracle cleaner. Rated at a B classification, it has no odor but it is caustic and should be used with care. Eye wear and protective gloves should be used to protect skin. TSP will remove grease and oil and many other chemicals used in the manufacturing of metal, fabrics, clothes and on other contaminated surfaces.

TSP must be activated by use in warm water. Washing repeatedly may eliminate chemicals and toxic dyes, and other odors from new clothes and fabrics.

TSP will also remove pesticide reside from non porous, hard surfaces such as floors and baseboards. BEWARE!!! If you are using this on delicate fabrics, it may discolor them, so test materials first. If you are washing floors, such as oak, be very careful not to get the floor to wet. Use a damp wipe rather than a lot of H2O, as oak and other woods will discolor if they get too wet!

As we enter into the damp season, we are taking 10% off all dehumidifiers between March 1st and April 1st. This is no April fools!!!

We highly recommend investing in one of these commercial dehumidifiers if you have a basement and
moisture  is a problem. Standard dehumidifiers will not remove enough moisture to reduce or eliminate mold. They will run constantly but will not remove enough moisture to get the humidity level below 56%, the level that most mold begins to grow at.

We dismantle these commercial units and remove toxic sound deadeners and other materials. These are units that have humidity controls that make it possible to remove almost all the humidity in the air. We use them, among other things, to reduce the  moisture level in wood and interior air before we install flooring. The sub floor and the flooring must be around 4 to 7 %, and this one unit can do this for a whole house. These are excellent for drying out damp cellars and can not be  compared to a standard floor dehumidifier unit, which has a hard time getting down to 60 or 70%  relative humidity in the summer. If you are to stop mold growth, you must get below 55% relative humidity. These units have controls that allow
you to determine what per centage humidity you get to, and they have the power to go down to lower than 10%. This will suck the moisture right out of the walls!

If you have to pump your waste water up to get it out of the basement, you may need a pump such as

Improper chimney venting can be a major issue relative to indoor air quality. Anyone can set up a chimney these days, but very few people are actually qualified to determine what type of chimney will work properly under exact site conditions. Code requires a certain height, but this is not always appropriate for each situation. And very few people actually check to be sure chimneys are venting properly under varied conditions. How furnaces or boilers are set up, what type of  internal house pressure issues may affect the draw, how cold the chimney is and how high it is off the roof of the house, or where it is placed on the roof of the house, all affect proper drafting.
Not all chimneys draw properly, and we find that  blow back of toxic gases is a common problem, especially when boilers and furnaces first fire up. If the chimney is cold and or if  the site creates down drafts from nearby trees or structures or hills, it may take more pressure to push the initial toxics up and out the chimney.

These inducers start before the furnace fires and draw until after the furnace or boiler shuts down. Installs easily in the furnace or boiler exhaust duck. Check boiler size and duct size to determine exact size.

There are many ways to reduce wall and ceiling cavity toxics when building a new house. One way is to use electrical
boxes that stop air flow through the electrical fixtures. These seat tightly against wall board, and seal tightly around incoming wires, so toxic air flow is eliminated.

MicroAlert is an alarm that you wear like a pager that will alert you to the presence of radio frequency and microwave radiation. The MicroAlert is important protection for all pacemaker users, those sensitive to RF radiation from TV or cell phone broadcasts, or anyone who lives or works in the presence of microwave or RF hazards. Can even be used to detect audio and video transmission from concealed bugs or the unauthorized use of cellular phones! MicroAlert will respond to as little as 1 µW/cm² on HIGH sensitivity, and as little as 3 µW/cm² on STANDARD sensitivity. Used to make door and window frames, cracks and holes air tight. There are a number of different types of expandable
foams on the market. Regular expanding foam, which is good for most applications where there is no restriction in the size
of the cavity to be filled. Minimal expanding foam on the other hand, will not blow out window and door frames, mishaping them as the foam cures. Latex based expanding foams are a poor substitute, as they lack body and substance. These foams cure to a hard non smelling foam with a solid coating on the outside.
 

Every house we go into has holes and leaks in the furnace, boiler vent duct or chimney attachment. This allows for
combustion gas blow back when the furnace fires up, and sometimes continually during regular running operations.
If you have a gas furnace, pilot toxics like carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxides etc can escape all the time if the house
pressure demands. All duct joints and intersections with chimneys should be air tight. This is the stuff that will with
stand the heat from stoves, boilers and furnaces, forming an air tight seal that should last for a long time. No odor,
use in applications up to 2000 degrees, and on clean surfaces.

Tad's Tips
Cementing up all the holes, cracks and seams is always a good move under any circumstances, but in many situations
this will not eliminate the source of all the leaks. This is especially true for gas appliances, which usually will leak from
so many sources, sealing cracks in exhaust vents may not have an impact. Because of all the variables with gas
appliances, we generally advocate the removal of this equipment, especially gas water heaters, dryers, furnaces and boilers.

There are variables that affect the efficiency of this item. The weather stripping must be checked to be sure
it is all in proper line before installing. The dampers fit tightly into your existing ducts, so if the weather stripping is not placed around the insert as it should be, lining up with itself, it may leak. If you would like us to check these for you, we will.

HEAT RECOVERY VENTILATORS
  STANDARD WHOLE HOUSE UNITS
These units have not been rebuilt, cleaned or decontaminated in any way. They will be delivered straight
out of the factory, and have all the standard materials in them. They are designed to heat incoming air
with the exhaust air running over it, through an aluminum heat exchanger. Another words, these units exhaust stale air from a particular location and bring in fresh air from the outside to supply certain areas you spend a lot of time in. The exhaust air runs through a heat exchange core that heats the incoming air, which also flows over the core as it comes in. These are available in different sizes, which can be used in different sized homes and spaces. These have double fan motors and operate
off 120 volt single phase power.
The first three model have single pass exchange and operate at approx  60 to 65 % efficiency.
The last two, DCS models have double pass exchange capacity and opperate at 85 to 90% efficiency.

DRAFT INDUCERS
Does you chimney create a toxic blow back situation? With the new low exhaust vent boilers and furnaces, toxic gases very often do not go up the chimney when the boiler starts. With the new metal chimney products available, anyone can set up a chimney these days, but very few people are actually qualified to determine what type of chimney will work properly under exact site conditions. Variables in chimney construction, height, chimney materials and boiler or furnace variables, and exhaust vent pipe set up, are among the many things that can affect draft efficiency. If you experience any sensitivity to combustion toxics because they are in your home, this piece of equipment is a very critical investment for your health. Remember, formaldehyde, sulfur dioxides, and carbon monoxide are among the many toxics that can be spilled from furnaces and boilers. This inducer is set to start blowing before the boiler goes on to get [warm] air moving up the chimney, and shuts off after the boiler or furnace turns off,  helping to forcing all toxic exhaust air up the chimney against any pressure resistance.

 These inducers start before the furnace fires and draw until after the furnace or boiler shuts down. Installs easily in the furnace or boiler exhaust duck. Check boiler size and duct size to determine the size inducer you need.

LEAD PAINT ENCAPSULATORS

Not too long ago I had a major fit because our local Vermont National Bank was using toxic paint remover during business hours!!! This was during the late fall when the place was closed tight and the ladies working there all day long had to breathe in toxics from those removers for days.
