INTRODUCTION

Long before  the words "Healthy Home"  became a huge marketing cliché, Tad Taylor was setting the standards in this area that others have tried to follow. Today there are just as many interpretations of what "healthy homes" are, as there are builders and designers! We welcome all interested parties to investigate the level of our abilities and concerns. One must compare consciousness and abilities if we are to understand variables   and details to be sure we will be getting exactly what we personally require in a finished product.

Just as there are so many different levels of awareness, there are just as many levels of unconsciousness. Until we personally have extensive experience in an area, and live our life to that standard, theoretically we may think we understand that area, but practically we are usually only able to perceive a very small portion of what that means to us. Because creating a truly healthy home is so detailed and encompasses so many varied skills and trades, all of which must be done with a very different and unusual consciousness, it is almost impossible to find the people who have all those special abilities in each of  the required areas.

Healthy homes come in all different levels, each addressing any given number of concerns. But no where else will you find the level of concern, or the capability to address all these areas properly, which allow us to establish the principles and practical actions that allow a home to reach the highest level relative to health. Investigating our experience and skills will show you what we mean.

There is no way to create a truly healthy home without specifically addressing the project from a one pointed health perspective. Understanding not only the theory, but the practical aspects of every single one of all the critical areas that are required to site, design, manage and build a home properly, is a life's work, not a hobby or a part time concentration. It must be lived. This is why there are so many compromises and failures in trying to create a truly healthy home.

Architectural Design

Designing buildings for health is a very detailed affair. Health is affected by scores of issues from any one area, starting with general location issues, to final clean up and finishing routines. On top of the long list of standard concerns, are the endless number of variables that make this very confusing if one has not had extensive experience in the risk areas relative to health and building. Just as in any specialized area of life, there are many different levels of knowledge and appreciation of what exactly "healthy" home design means. Definitions vary widely because of this, but there is no question that as the skill level increases, the number of people with the ability to meet acceptable requirements decreases. If we picture the entire group of architects and designers who do this type of work as a pyramid, you will find Tad Taylor's Healthy Homes-LLC alone at the top of the pyramid. Here's why.

Around the country we find numerous people working in this area, most not regularly, and usually only on occasion. We read articles in the Sunday L.A. and New York Times, the Boston Globe, the Post and so on of projects by people labeled as "healthy". But the design principles and the areas of health concern that are addressed, always fall drastically short of what they could be or should be if health is really a concern. People in general should be aware of this. In all these projects, they fail to identify [or deal with] all the sources of deadly toxics and materials that create sick buildings and sick people. Never mentioned are scores of siting concerns, including micro climate issues and earth issues that must be addressed to avoid health problems. Never mentioned are the natural air flow patterns relative to specific type of structure and design. Never mentioned are all the specific processes required for handling special and regular materials, equipment, coatings, and sealers that are required to eliminate the risk of contamination from environmental, site and workman use, problems or errors. Ironically, there is never any mention given to the different levels and degree of difficulty of technique, material and equipment choice and usage, and specific processes required for properly addressing and dealing with the different levels of health concerns clients have. If a healthy project is to be successful, how can it be designed to eliminate all these risks,  if they are not specifically identified by the designer? Only by identifying them as risk areas can they be addressed properly and eliminated.

The real issue here, is how much a person knows about all these areas to begin with. How can a person with limited knowledge of toxics, design and build a truly healthy home? The answer is obvious. The end results can only be a very proportionate healthy home at best, and as we have found, many of these are not healthy by any standard. Most homes actually are very risky health wise. By using the word "healthy", we assume that designers and architects have the ability to address ALL the major health and risk issues in their building design. But because the misuse of the word "healthy" is so prevalent, we caution you to be very careful about how you choose the right person to design your healthy home. Be sure the standard you require, is the standard you are going to get.

For years Tad has set the industry guidelines for designing and building healthy homes, because his life actually depends on a strict understanding and control of absolutely all these areas. Designing and building for health is possible for him because he has a thorough understanding of modern day toxics, especially sub odor level toxics. Tad wrote the book on low level toxics identification, and is the leading specialist in the country on sub odor level toxics identification and remediation. Inspecting sick buildings and setting up programs to deal with all levels of toxic materials is something Tad has done for years. It is imperative to have this knowledge of what situations and items create health risks, and the skill of being able to identify all these toxics sources under different site and environmental situations, if you are going to be able to eliminate them as risks in buildings you design. Intertwined in this specialized area of toxics identification, is how toxics move and work outside and within our environments. Air flow patterns of different design and construction methods, site and micro climate air flow patterns, coupled with seasonal environmental issues all affect the ability of a structure to remain healthy under changing conditions. These are areas Tad addresses in all his design work. Personal health concerns and patterns, critical to each individual persons level of sensitivity, must be clearly understood in order to provide a risk free healthy home for each individual situation. We do not experiment around in any of these areas, or with our clients health, as others do. We know the problems, we know the financial and health ramifications if poor choices and mistakes are made, and we know how to prevent all the problems that cause unhealthy buildings. No two clients are the same, no two sites are the same, and no two projects are ever the same. All develop a separate set of criteria and problems.

So, when you are looking for a new healthy home design and a qualified designer, be sure you get a list of all the areas they have the ability to deal with, before you make any commitment. Then, send that list off to us, and let us critique it, so you can receive complete protection. If we balance what we do with professionals, it will come back to us many fold. Why run the risk?

Here are some of the things that we do that display our obvious commitment to creating leading edge custom
or standardized healthy homes.

1. The first thing we do at Tad Taylor's Healthy Homes when a client makes an inquiry, is send out information on, who we are, what we charge, and how we work, so the client understands us and our process. Our clients must know us, and understand what we do, why we do what we do, and how we do it. Every client should understand these things and be completely  comfortable with them.

2. In our second information package is a detailed HEALTH FORM which gives us at Tad Taylor's Healthy Homes a clear definition of who you are and what your health concerns are. We must know exactly who you are and what your requirements are if we are to help you achieve your goals! We are the only design group in the world that requires a health form and a thorough understanding of your health concerns BEFORE we commit to a project. Our analysis of these forms, helps set up the project perimeters for design and all other project concerns, including material choices, project management structure, building techniques, and workman contracts, which are all determined by your health concerns.

3. The custom design phase of your project is initiated with the our setting up the project criteria, on which all project details are based. Design must be based on specific criteria for a combination or intertwining of both aesthetic and health concerns. These must be balanced perfectly with all other areas, and therefore require specific processes be carried out through out every phase of the project. Criteria for each specific area must be set up and tracked through all the phases, in all contracts and work procedures.

Our procedures and processes have been created through years of hard work and are the intellectual property of Tad Taylor, protected by law. In cases where inexperienced builders and architects have gotten a hold of this information, it has been used improperly, endangering clients and putting projects in double jeopardy, with financial loss, project failure and heavy health damages a result. It is not just about having this information, it is about the way this information is used. How productively the information is used, is based on the experience level of the person using it.

At Tad Taylor's Healthy Homes, we also specialize in interpreting the aesthetic imagination of each client and assembling a harmonious collection of elements that accentuate the client's personality to perfection. Specific attention is given to the client's lifestyle and personal rhythms, as well as the arrangement of space and form according to function. We specialize in age old design principles coupled with leading edge technology in order to create the cleanest, safest healing environments possible. We compile a listing of all the client's design ideas and assemble these requests within the range of a projected budget, and then present a selection of preliminary designs to start working from. We always address the long term investment concerns, with health as the main priority, and work to maximize harmony with site and community, energy efficiency, proper material selection and use, day lighting, low maintenance and low waste issues.

TTHH-LLC can provide a selection of a preliminary design concept drawings, working drawings, project models and 3-D drawings. Highly detailed computers generated drawings give us the edge on standard architectural drawings. All project data is documented and organized on computer for client use, as well as for distribution to contractors and consultants. Special attention is given to assist in efficient team set up, management structure, and communications systems, to ensure the clarity of all communications, and to ensure on time and on budget projects, as well as productive, growth oriented relationships.

                                                Healthy Offices

Not only are people at risk in their homes from all types of toxics, but offices are also rarely designed to reduce or eliminate health risks. All over the world people are setting up offices filled with computers and office equipment and materials that create health risks. No space is more filled with risk elements than the office, a place where we need to be operating at a maximum rather than a minimum. Both long term and short term affects from toxics

Interior Design

Aesthetics are a critical component for healing. Having an interior designed and decorated is a very personal experience. People want this service to help make a clear, committed statement about their identity; who they are and what image they want to project. The image that they are looking for can be successfully achieved only if the person doing the job is able to capture what the client wants and sees in their mind.

The designer becomes a translator who takes the client's dialogue and puts it into a design form. That form is a composition of environments that project who the client actually is. The goal is that the environment becomes completely harmonious with the client's personality. The designer is able to do this only if they are adept at the art of listening, which makes it possible to actually hear the needs and wants of the clients clearly. TTHH-LLC. does not believe that successful relationships are based on monologues. As designers, we generally choose not to dictate the style, but offer our talents to translate the client's needs into the language of beauty and composition which is the essence of interior design.

Pam is a wizard at working in a simple step by step process to make it clear and easy for the client to visualize the transformation of  their space. This process begins with a presentation of a preliminary design concept, by showing a clear visual understanding of the client's requests, which are realistic renderings, photographic layouts, fabric selections, etc. Timetables are clearly laid out for client approval, along with detailed estimates for products and services.

Pam and her assistant designers work at an hourly rate so that the client is in control of expenses can decide on priorities. For example, a project may be organized in a Phase I, Phase II type execution, in which all the activities are clearly outlined. The client becomes the master of time being spent in any area, as they may choose to add or delete things as the project moves along. The designers work within the time and parameters that are chosen by the client. This is a very clean, responsible interaction, with no surprises.

Materials and products are sourced from the major design centers on the East and West coasts, and requests for custom designed furniture, accessories, rugs, etc. are filled by TTHH-LLC. designers and our extensive network or expert fabricators. Clients with special requests based on health limitations, allergies and chemical sensitivities can expect the best in design and the safest materials available.

We are dedicated to translating the client's individuality into the design dimension. We are committed to quality and service with integrity.

Project Management

In each of the various classes of projects, proper management services are critical to getting the job done with the highest standards of quality, within schedule and budget, and with all the special requirements for those whose health depends on it.

For healthy or chemically free building projects of any type, proper management  pays for itself  many times over. It saves time, tons of  money and protects against mistakes that affect the health of the client and the overall success of the project. Services include setting the standards for and overseeing material testing, material inspections before and after purchasing, transport, delivery, handling, storage, outgassing, processing, cleaning, installation, finishing, final outgassing and cleaning of the environment, maintenance program set up and so on.

The Project Manager will be in charge of all on site activities. He will set up operations rules and oversee all the site activities. Rules governing proper material handling, site operations, and quality of workmanship for all the trades are within the jurisdiction of the Project Manager. Most of all, each sub contractor will follow the special contracts set up by Tad Taylor's Healthy Homes that insure all work will be done to very specific standards.

All prospective personnel will be interviewed, hired, trained, and overseen by the Project Manager. All contractors will be selected because of their advanced skills and history of producing the highest quality work. TTHH-LLC. demands long lasting, low maintenance construction methods, and demands that their contractors are specialists. As required contractors and subs will be trained or updated in the latest methods for responsible building.

Detailed computer checklist have been set up to ensure the responsible and efficient functioning of all project management systems. On site monitoring of all activities is the standard commitment for our building project management systems.

Indoor Air Quality Inspections

Almost all of today's homes, offices, schools and work places are filled with hazardous materials that affect indoor air quality. Reactions such as headaches, mucus build up, tight throat, flu like symptoms, rashes, nausea, irritability, exhaustion and worse are not uncommon. Both short term and long-term health problems for people of all ages are the results of working in environments with too many toxics for extended periods of time.

Although we normally don't think of household materials as being a threat to our health, toxic chemicals are used in almost every product made today, including building materials, soaps and detergents, clothing, carpets, fabrics, paints and sealers, bedding, furniture, food and scores of other items to numerous to mention here. Synthetic materials, appliances, heating and air conditioning systems are also all filled with, and can develop potential dangers from both biological and synthetic toxics. The odors can be great, or sometimes not even noticeable, and dangerous and deadly, just like carbon monoxide, which is odorless, but can still kill you. Modern day toxics have numerous characters as well, which makes them difficult to identify. Sometimes they are a gas, sometimes a solid, and sometimes a liquid- or any combination of all of these. When they are tested for [the time of day and season], what the conditions are [weather, humidity, and temperature] and all the controlling variables, must be addressed, and thoroughly understood to obtain accurate testing data. Because most people are not familiar with the character and seriousness of these toxics, and how they contaminate air, they are most frequently classified as nonexistent or too insignificant to be a concern. There in lies the heart of the problem. We as a society are far to unfamiliar with the severity of the health risk created by common household toxics.

The bizarre fact is that most of these toxic chemicals used today in materials and equipment have not been tested to make sure they don't adversely affect heath. A growing number of these that are now being tested, have been found to be carcinogenic. Exposure to materials in these categories for both short and extended periods of time, can create all types of health risks, especially for those with compromised immune systems and chemical sensitivities. Many of these can bring about the lowering of sensitivity levels, to the point where chronic fatigue and chemical sensitivities becomes a major concern. Most modern day toxics are unnoticeable in odor level. Therefore people can't relate to them being significant health risks. What our society is finding out, is that many of these chemicals are dangerous to our health, even carcinogenic, below levels that we can detect by odor. This is why air quality specialists and testing companies can't properly identify or address many sick building problems. Most sick building toxics exist at levels that are too low for testing equipment to detect, and the people doing the testing have no practical knowledge or experience with understanding sub odor level toxics, or the health reactions people are having. This leaves a huge gap in the ability of developing skills for detecting or identifying low level toxics that adversely affect health.

Tad has done inspections all over the world, in all types of climates and structures. Because he is chemically sensitive, he is capable of identifying toxics at levels lower than what most equipment can detect!  From years of experience in many areas, he has also developed the skills of visually identifying an endless list of variables that create health risks, from biological, natural and synthetic toxics. Inspections must be able to accurately identify conditions and reasons for problems, risks relative to health problems and reactions of all levels of sensitivities, and options and costs for dealing with problems.

Tad  has compiled detailed checklists for inspecting homes, schools and businesses for dangerous toxics. Each inspection covers a complete list of contaminants, including building materials, personal items and equipment, sources of electromagnetic pollution, sub odor level toxics, combustion and fuel toxics and so on. The inspection report will include a list of all the sources and conditions creating offensive materials or situations, an explanation of what can be done about each one   and options for dealing with them. Many items that can cause serious health problems can be done away with quickly, easily and inexpensively. Other sick building situations can be devastating to health and very costly to repair.

If  you are sensitive to things in your environment, this inspection will have an immediate impact on your health, how you are feeling, and your productivity. We travel all over the world, and are very familiar with all the toxics and situations relative to health, site and building concerns. If you have been unable to identify sources of contamination issues to this point in time, we will solve this problem for you. No other inspector has the skills Tad has in identifying common household toxics.

Specific lab tests to detect exact quantities of radon, asbestos, water contaminants, pesticides, mold, dust mites and other pollutants are available, but must be requested in advance, so the proper equipment can be obtained for inspection day. We also have a collection of very valuable equipment required to make exact test measurements on moisture, electromagnetics, mold, and so on.

Real Estate Inspections

Tad  is an experienced healthy  home inspector who can identify every type of building health problem. Because he is chemically sensitive,  he is also in an exceptionally rare class of  inspectors who are able to identify sub odor level toxics from his own reactions. When trying to set up a safe healing environment, this is a critical skill that helps determine risk and financial assessment for renovation projects before any purchase is considered!

Tad  offers services for locating safe properties in all parts of the world for those persons with chemical sensitivities and all health concerns, as well as inspecting or locating specific homes and sites for new buildings. These services follow the strict criteria established by  Tad over years of experience, coupled with the clients requirements, and typically include an analysis of the general geographic area, adjoining properties, and of course, overall air quality.

Detailed  inspection services focus on evaluations of  more specific concerns, such as mold tests to determine location, type and quantity of molds present, indoor and outdoor pesticide tests, radon, water evaluation, sub odor level toxics, combustibles, wall cavity toxics and so on. Tad's inspections reveal in detail all the problem areas of a property - inside and out - in an organized, easy to read and understand report. Included will be the reasons why these problem areas exist, the extent of the damages or problems, different options for fixing the problems, approximate costs for these repairs, and what can be done to prevent these types of damages in the future. He also details the quality of craftsmanship used in all the trades, and the quality of materials and equipment used in the house.

Reports are divided into four main sections:  The Introduction - the general summary; List of Specific Areas of Concern;  and Closing Summary. These reports are available in typewritten form and also on computer disk for easy transfer, tracking and future updating. An average report length for a medium sized property is approximately 30 pages. Costs of reports are adaptable to client need and requirements. Special tests requiring lab samples must be requested in advance so materials can be prepared for inspection day.

Other Services

Healthy Schools- Healthy kids

For many years Tad has created custom interiors for children, including day schools, private schools and church schools, and residential interiors. All services have been included from design to finishing, with furniture, lighting, murals and coatings for floors and walls, soft goods [blankets and quilts, curtains and carpets] and all accessories. Our work has been published in interior design books and seen over the years through well known stores such as FAO Schwartz in San Francisco, Bloomingdales, Penny Whistle and Child Craft in N.Y., Beverly Hills, and other major children's stores through out the country. Tad's children's graphics are well known around the country. Although we have continued to work with schools over the years, we have not really focused on making this huge body of work public until now. One reason is the problem so many kids are having with learning difficulties, many which are caused or influenced by low level toxics so commonly used in building materials or caused by bad building design.

The need for creative healthy learning and living environments for kids has reached an all time high. Allergies, asthma and  other chemical sensitivities, all linked to learning disabilities, are way up with kids today. The number of kids whose parents force them to take drugs to "help control" them is insane. We spend millions on national programs "to just say no", but we are the first ones to give our kids drugs because they have a hard time concentrating or focusing on school while they are there. Statistics show a majority of problems are from unacceptable indoor air quality, which is filled with chemicals and biological contaminants that help cause these problems. It is also widely known that most administrations lack the interest and knowledge to deal properly with the sub standard indoor air quality that exists in 99% of all schools. What are we doing to our kids and why????

While most administrations don't know what to do about maintenance and building problems, we offer complete solutions.
We are publicly challenging each one of these administrations to do the right thing, which after all is their responsibility, is it not?- to create a healthy learning environment for those who depend on them to do so. Both teachers and students alike are standing in desperate need. Little do people know that a major part of each schools budget is for maintenance that never happens! Large maintenance companies receive fat contracts to clean and maintain air systems, but this is rarely done. The air quality according to these companies standards is fine!!! [You know I have inspected so many schools who are in this situation, yet even when kids and teachers are falling over sick developing chemical sensitivities, administrators fall back on industry standards that are not good enough to prevent poor health, company procedures that accomplish very little in the way of proper maintenance, and the same old response- it takes too much money! FALSE!! It is just that these folks with all these degrees from colleges and institutes from around the world, these so called professional air quality specialists included,  have not grown with the times enough to protect the health of those in these buildings, that is painfully clear. And government standards do not begin to acknowledge or deal with current health issues relative to indoor air quality.] This actually is a very simple area that can usually be dealt with and maintained for reasonable amounts of money.

We have organized a section in our resource center to focus solely on this area. Both graphics and materials are combined in our efforts to let people know what options exist for healthy building materials, furniture and interiors, at reasonable costs!! Not only can these critical environments be healthy, they can be creative and exciting as well!!!  Available are portfolios of years of graphic work from hundreds of custom projects in and around the New York metropolitan area, including Greenwich and Long Island, as well as shelves full of creative healthy materials for your project!.

Welcome back, Tad Taylor's Healthy Fantasy Furniture!! Custom designs and full construction and interior decorating available, as well as project specifications for larger projects.

 Trailer Rehabilitation
We are discontinuing our work on cars, vans, and recreational vehicles, but will continue to do travel trailers as we have for years. These may be a critical necessity for the seriously allergic and environmentally ill . Tad is very experienced  in rebuilding aluminum skinned trailers such as Airstreams for both temporary or permanent use, so safe traveling or living is possible in a healthful environment. Call for our TRAILER RENOVATION package, and check out our WEB pages on   this subject.

Rental Renovation
When renting a temporary living space, the need for a clean environment may make it necessary to alter an existing space by adding safe flooring, walls and ceilings, installing venting and air filtration systems, cleaning, and or covering interiors with foil and tape. Tad and his experienced crew know what to do and how to do it. Cost analysis always available in advance.

Furniture Design
The storage of potentially dangerous outgassing items has been a problem for many (including us) that is why we have designed and built pieces such as outside exhausted cabinets for televisions, computers, copiers, clothes, faxes, bookcases, reading boxes, filing cabinets, and work stations. We have worked with metals and many clean materials to construct creative furniture of all types, for offices, schools and private residences.

Real Estate Search and Analysis
Tad has traveled to and lived in some of the cleanest areas of the country. His research into clean areas has taken us to the west and southwest, northern and southern regions of the east coast including the Bahamas, Hawaii, Australia, Mexico and Central America. Extensive testing and checklists are used to determine pollutant sources and the feasibility of actually living in an area. We also work with realtors in a number of  locations looking  for clean properties to develop. Sharon can send you our REAL ESTATE package.
Tad Taylor's HEALTHY HOMES  has just added a new local realtor to their team, and now offers services locating existing homes and healthy properties for new building development in the southern Vermont area.  With this exciting new addition to the team, a more current list of land and housing options will be available.

Healthy Prefab Buildings
Because of the need for buildings that do not make people sick, we are offering custom and standard designed prefabricated cottages, school rooms and offices for those concerned with health issues. These are energy efficient in design, and have the ability to be moved and set up in any type of location. Buildings range from clean room design to full service facilities with full plumbing and electrical options. Solar packages are available for remote living and energy conscious people. Call Sharon for our PREFAB package.

Publications
Information is of little value unless it can be used to help someone else. We make all our information available to others in any way we can in hopes that it may add a new perspective for dealing with life in a responsible, productive manner, especially in dealing with problems caused by environmental illness. Therefore, we speak and write and film as much as possible for the benefit of others. A list of our currently completed works is available in our PUBLICATIONS section.
